Christmas Special
The entry below is a synopsis of our speakers talk on 18th December 2025.
The last meeting programme was a Christmas Special by Hazel and Michael Graham & Hilary and Ian East featuring “The old days of fishing”
They started off with an old man’s Joke which reminded some of the men of how corny old time music hall used to be, followed by their first of the songs in their presentation.
The ladies had their own spot in the program which told the story of the North Shields fish wives known as "Herring Girls" were crucial to the booming herring industry, following fleets to gut, salt, and pack fish, often from Scotland, working long hours in harsh conditions, and contributing to local life alongside local women processing fish at the Fish Quay.
Their daily routines and the lifestyle they lived including showing the normal dress that the Herring Girls wore every day, the theme even down to working with their men in rescues of fishermen in trouble due to very bad weather there wasn't much that these fisher women would not do. Stand by your man doesn’t get a look in.
The jokes kept comming to allow time for changes of instruments and clothing, followed by more music of that age.
